in Scales

As we've learned in other posts…

Scales are important!

If yous know your scales, playing chords volition be very very easy to practice!

The Minor Scale

If y'all remember, the major scale pattern is:

W-W-H-Due west-Westward-W-H

Now, to add another "scale" to your musical toolbox, the minor scale pattern is simply:

Westward – H – W – West – H – W – Due west

The (C Pocket-sized Scale) is:

C – D – E flat – F – G – A apartment – B flat – and C

Permit'south explore this closer:

From C to D is a whole pace (west).

From D to E flat is a half step (h).

From Eastward apartment to F is a whole step (w).

From F to G is a whole step (w).

From One thousand to A flat is a half stride (h).

From A flat to B flat is a whole footstep (westward).

From B flat to C is a whole step (w).

Attempt playing all 12 minor scales with the pattern above (C min, D flat min, D min, East flat min, and and so on…)

Minor Scales In Gospel Music

Gospel music is closely associated with the minor calibration. Another scale that gospel music (and many other styles of music) utilizes is the:

Blues Calibration

You lot've heard information technology in B.B. King's music! You've heard it in gospel, jazz, and rock. Just nigh whatsoever type of music you can call up of utilizes the Blues Scale.

The Dejection Scale is simply a small-scale scale without a few notes, and… with one "other" note added. An example is given below:

Recall that the (C minor) scale is:

C (1), D(ii), E flat (three), F(4), 1000(5), A flat (vi), B flat (7), and C (8)
*numbers represent scale caste

To create a blues scale, simply get rid of the (2) and (6) degree. In (C minor), that would exist D and A flat. And so add the note in betwixt the (4) and (5) degree.

1: Omitting the (2) and (half-dozen) notes would create the following scale:

C, Due east apartment, F , G, B apartment, C

ii. Calculation the note in between the (4) – F & the (five) – One thousand would mean adding an F# (or Yard apartment) between F and G.

iii. The new scale is:

C – E flat – F – G flat – Grand – B flat – C

Endeavour playing it!

Annotation: A blues calibration just has 6 unique tones.

You lot'll discover blues scales all throughout blues, gospel, and other genres. Listen to some of your recordings and you're guaranteed to hear them!

Well… thanks for your time again!

Until next time —

Howdy, I'm Jermaine Griggs, founder of this site. We teach people how to limited themselves through the language of music. But as you talk and listen freely, music can be enjoyed and played in the aforementioned style... if you know the rules of the "language!" I started this site at 17 years old in August 2000 and more than a decade afterward, we've helped literally millions of musicians along the way. Savor!
